We took a ferry out in an island
We took a ferry out to an island one day. It started out a little rocky as there was a beach hazard advisory and choppy waters. Our boat captain made sure we got out there safely. He told us some stories and history about the island before we left.
Once we got there, it was time to explore. We arrived a little after 11 am. First we walked around some before getting lunch. After we ate we continued exploring.
We spent some time in the museum looking at artifacts and news articles about the island and it’s history, which is heavily dependent on their crabbing and fishing industry. They even have their own dialect.
Something we leaned about Tangier, which is a problem for many islands and coastal areas, is that they are receding into the ocean due to erosion and climate change. The island has decreased in size over the years. They are also having a problem with people leaving the island when they grow up, causing their workforce to be smaller and less diverse.
The island reminded me a lot of coastal Maine, specifically areas like Deer Isle and Stonington. It’s a very small, close-knit community that is changing due to modernization, climate change, and the overall economic/technological/environmental evolution of the country.
I don’t generally talk about my editing style, but for this post I will. I used a @lightroom preset called “Arctic Express” that @j__potter._ gave me a few years ago. I altered some of the colors and brightness, along with decreasing the clarity. I lowered the clarity just enough for the image to still be recognizable, but have a dreamy effect to reflect the feeling of being on the island. Being an outsider walking around Tangier felt like I was in a completely different place, almost unreal. It was a really cool little adventure that I’ve been excited to share; these are some of my favorite pictures I’ve ever edited just because of the whole experience.
