Mining and renewable energy: TEPCO in action
Japan's largest electricity supplier TEPCO plans to use surplus electricity to mine cryptocurrencies.
The main argument is that during the daytime in rural areas, the wind turbines and solar panels installed by the company produce too much unused energy, and the technology for storing it has not yet reached the necessary level. So why not use the surplus to feed mining farms?
A "part of the profits" of the coins "will be returned to local governments and businesses" in the form of electricity subsidies, TEPCO added.
It is curious that despite the problems of miners around the world, Japan is not the first country that is trying to burn electricity: in Latin America (Costa Rica, Paraguay) they have already used such a scheme for “recycling” excess electricity from hydroelectric power plants to mining farms.
